Info About Access
- We are experiencing access storms. Notable slowdowns occur in the day
largely from hosts inside and some outside NSWSES/NSWCPHD which have
no known organization or host name identity.
- So we may survive, to serve those we are here to serve, some
internet protocol, news and web, access is limited to hosts with
Internet Domain Registration and to named domains.
- Others and friendly / treaty flags have and will be added at their
or their sponsor request.
- If you are ready you can submit a registration request

Note
About Name Service --
Name Service has different meanings to different users and systems.
- The Internet Domain Name Service (DNS), also called BIND
(Berkeley .. Name ..), is the semi-invisible engine which relates
host names to IP addresses.
- The Microsoft, DEC, HP and other proprietary name services, like Sun
YP or NIS are peculiar to those operating systems and are not
global over the internet to relate internet numbers to
internet names.
- Much DNS information is not needed outside your network on the public
internet. It may not be helpful if not needed outside. If you
use a proxy server like "www-proxy.nswses.navy.mil" .. "8080", if
you are in NSWCPHD for http, ftp and gopher, only you wont need
DNS registry.
- Registration with Code 1T00 of your IP address and Ethernet address
are essential to tracking and
protection of our net BUT do not ensure a DNS database
registration. Check first if you care if you are in DNS.
[Check Your
Hostname OR Internet Number]
- If you try to read Usenet news or access many "ftp" servers, and you
have NO "DNS" registration you may get an access denied message, or,
simply .. NO ACCESS.
- This happens when a server sees you coming with claimed name and
IP but can not reverse-lookup your address in DNS at your home site.

Be Aware Footnote:
During core hours both networks and servers get very busy and
may respond SLOWLY or not at all.
There are many possible causes from host to local net to world
wide intermittent failures. Most Internet connections pass thru
dozens of hosts.
In case of insurmountable usage problems submit a Sun System
trouble call .. missing information, user, application, contact
info, host may prevent assistance in a timely manner.
SMAN Form
Steps are underway to improve the connectivity.
